The Urgency: A Rising Tide of Violence

Recent years have seen an alarming increase in gang-related activities involving Somali youth. Public spaces — from schools and graduation parties to wedding venues and community centers — have increasingly become scenes of violence and fear. These acts not only endanger lives but also jeopardize the future of young people and undermine trust in key social institutions. Without proactive, coordinated responses, the normalization of this violence threatens long-term harm to our families, schools, and communities.

Meeting Objectives

  • Create a safe and inclusive space for community dialogue on gang violence.
  • Understand root causes and enablers of youth gang involvement.
  • Evaluate current responses from families, religious leaders, schools, and law enforcement.
  • Develop practical, community-based solutions to curb gang activity.
  • Enhance collaboration among community actors, youth organizations, and security bodies.

Key Outcomes and Next Steps

  • Greater public awareness of the causes and effects of gang violence.
  • Stronger connections between community stakeholders determined to confront the issue.
  • Identification of early warning signs and preventive strategies to protect at-risk youth.
  • A proposed task force or working group to sustain momentum and implement next steps.
  • Community-driven recommendations for further research, policy advocacy, and the creation of targeted youth programs — especially during summer and winter breaks.
